Getting fit can be a very rewarding journey. The following are some practical tips to help get you started.

Set Clear Goals – set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. For example, “I want to run a 5K in three months” is more effective than simply saying, “I want to get fit.”

Create a Routine – establish a schedule of days/times for you to work out each week, and stick to them, just like any other appointment. Remember if you’re new to exercise, begin with shorter sessions and gradually increase intensity and duration to avoid injury and burnout.

Make it Enjoyable – make sure to choose activities you enjoy, it’s easier to exercise when you are doing something that you like and look forward to. And even then, it is nice to mix things up to prevent boredom.

Nutrition Matters – eat a balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Plan meals to ensure you’re nourishing your body properly. And make sure to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after your workouts.

Seek Accountability – train with a workout buddy. Having a friend join you can keep you motivated and make exercising more enjoyable. Also, it’s a good idea to track your progress. Use a fitness app, a journal, or a wearable device to track workouts.

Mindset Matters – stay positive, focus on your progress rather than perfection. Getting fit is a journey, and results take time. Stay committed even when there are days or weeks where things do not go to plan.

Incorporate Rest – make sure you include rest days in your plan to allow your body the time it needs to recover, and to help prevent injuries. Listen to your body at all times, if you’re feeling fatigued or in pain, take a break or modify your routine.

Education and Resources – consider hiring a personal trainer or attending fitness classes to learn proper techniques and get personalized guidance. This is especially important if you are new to the gym.

Make it a lifestyle – rather than thinking of it as a chore that has to be done try to integrate fitness into your day-to-day routine. Look for opportunities to be active throughout your day—take the stairs, go for a walk during lunch, or do quick workouts at home.

Community Support – join classes. Participating in fitness classes or clubs can create a sense of community and provide additional motivation.

Whatever else you do enjoy the fitness journey, stay flexible and adjust your goals as needed. Enjoy the process and remember that you are doing it for you, no one else!
